kristofer johnsson | for the love of designi’ve been thinking a lot lately about my formal training in the fine arts. was school something you enjoyed? i can’t remember if i actually appreciated it in the moment, but i miss it more than ever now.

i’d give just about anything for that 10-minute 10 pm walk down lover’s lane (that was the street name, no joke!) to my empty studio space. death cab for cutie and copeland carried me through many late nights in the studio and still remind me of charcoal stained fingers, 32 ounce diet dr. peppers and sheets of newsprint the size of my body. i’ve romanticized those moments in my head and can’t help but long for an extra bedroom to turn into an amazing space for getting my hands dirty.

these still life shots by photographer kristofer johnsson remind me of one of my very favorite classes i took in college. i’ll be honest, still lifes weren’t exactly my forte, but that was where i fell head over heels for canvas and oils.

kristofer johnsson | for the love of designso much of graphic and web design is inspired by others’ design work on the internet these days. anyone can buy the adobe creative suite, watch a few tutorials and take a stab at designing a logo without any kind of degree. and many succeed in doing so.

this may be stemming from too many long, consecutive days in front of a computer screen, but i’ve had a hard time feeling completely fulfilled with the graphic aspect of design lately. it was those uninterrupted moments in the studio that i was creating, making a mess, staying up until 5 am, sketching and painting and repainting that i felt most inspired and alive.

with that being said, this weekend is for:

  • experimenting with my new lens (!!!)
  • dusting off my gauche
  • disconnecting from the internet + getting outside + getting inspired

first off, happy tuesday! i apologize for things slowing down on the blog recently. the rest of my life has taken a turn down chaotic road, so le blog has been put on the back burner. not for much longer though, cross my heart.

i’ve been doing a lot of brand identity research as of late and needed to share with you one in particular that i found and loved. you guys already know i’m a sucker for gold foil, but it was the color palette that really stood out to me on this one. so chic, right?

travel | for the love of design
one of my goals for the new year was to travel more. yesterday an email popped into my inbox with some fares that just about killed me dead. i guess i’m at that point in my life where impulse buying at target is no longer satisfying enough. no way, now i do flights.

but unlike that evil trail mix (you know the one!) and the totally necessary sports bras and wedges and facial scrubs that are constantly sneaking their way right into my cart, i’m definitely not having buyer remorse here. because, guys! travel is the gift that keeps on giving. experiences are always the best kinds of purchases. and having places and people and experiences to look forward to is fun.

wouldn’t these postcards from a pair of pears be a cute way to show you’re missing those loved ones at home (but not too much) while you’re away?

when i’ve finalized plans i’m going to be needing your recommendations for all the cool spots, k?

acre | for the love of design

it’s been a while since i’ve put a bit of design inspiration up here on the blog. which is a bit funny because i’m constantly finding great branding inspiration and it’s almost always on my mind due to the fact that it is my job…but it usually winds up on my pinterest instead of ftlod. so silly. making a mental note to do more of this in the future.

acre is a singapore-based design studio with a really fresh and modern outlook. i’m a huge fan of the branding experience they’ve created for pact. i love a good ampersand, especially when it’s cleverly executed.

recent work | for the love of design

i hope you had a wonderful weekend! i spent most of sunday taking photographs of my most recent work for my portfolio (which will hopefully be up and running in a few short weeks). i don’t often blog about the projects i’m working on, but because it’s been a while since the last time i’ve had the pleasure of working in print, i thought i would share!

this wedding invitation suite was for a close friend that will be getting married at the end of december. her venue is the most perfect rustic barn, so we went with a neutral color palette. we’ve known each other for years and our aesthetic is pretty much the exact same. needless to say, she was the easiest client i have ever had and this project was one of my favorites.

ylva skarp art prints | for the love of design

many of you are probably familiar with the ever so popular swedish designer ylva skarp and her beautiful calligraphic art prints. i was so excited to find images of her home decorated for the holiday. it’s not very often that we see a neutral color palette for christmas and i find it extremely refreshing.

my family has always decorated with traditional holiday colors, but in my own home i prefer to use whites, silvers, golds and glitter (glitter is a color, right?). do you have specific colors + textures you are drawn to when decorating your space for the holidays?

daily dishonesty | for the love of design

are these not the greatest? i think at some point we all tell ourselves a little white lie to get us through the day. today mine would be “a cookie is a totally acceptable and healthy breakfast choice”.

are you looking forward to anything in particular this weekend? i have a bachelorette party to attend (my first ever, can you believe it?), so things could get a little nutty.

thankful for:
my loving + talented mama for sewing me the cutest costume for said decade-themed bachelorette party (you’ll want to be following me here to see this gem!)
small signs of christmas emerging all around my city
that the elections are finally over
wedding invitation i’ve been working on are in my hands and [nearly] ready to be shared
vacation is right around the corner – bring on that warm floridian weather, baby.

happy weekend, friends!
