art + design

i’ve been thinking a lot about art lately. i have several empty frames (actually there are some really happy people in them, they just happened to come as a package deal) just hanging out on my shelves. i also have a closet full of empty canvases and trash bags full of paint tubes. and to be quite honest, they’re getting preeeetty dusty.

my favorite courses in college were my illustration and painting classes and i am just a little unsure as to why i quit doing the things that i love the most. my graphic/web design jobs require me to be in front of a computer and it seems that i just forgot about all of the other mediums out there.

one of my favorite memories of college was late studio nights, headphones in and completely zoning everything out, just getting my paint on. i’m going to break out the paints after i get back from vacation and i kind of can’t wait.

do you have anything planned for the holiday? i think you should do something you’ve been missing for a while, too.

have a great weekend guys and gals. i’ll see you back here on monday. hey, while you’re here check out these oh-so-beautiful room portraits, why don’t ya?

i love when food + design come together. my favorite places to eat tend to have great aesthetics and i choose my wine by how the label looks. it’s a little silly and may have a lot to do with the fact that i am a designer, but i believe that great visuals makes for a great product.

the geometry of pasta is a super cute book of all things, you guessed it – pasta. pasta for me as a child usually meant angel hair noodles with preggo. and then i spent a semester abroad in italy and my eyes were opened to a world of culinary possibilities. my fave is pesto gnocchi or pretty much anything with truffle oil or browned butter. mmmm carbs. seriously though, this book will not only knock your socks off with how pretty it is, but it is also functional. weird concept, right? check out some of the recipes here!

is this place not amazing? several audible gasps happened when i found these images. it is a straight up color explosion in there and i love it to pieces. what a dining experience, huh? let’s just go ahead and chalk up one more reason why i must go to london immediately.

i’ve had mint on the brain lately. i recently purchased a juicer and am excited about trying new recipes. i’ve been pretty unadventurous so far (carrots, celery, kale, apples…), but i am a little hesitant to start using the herbs. don’t get me wrong, i love me some mint colored denim and i brush with mint toothpaste every day, but i am just not down with mint in my food, you guys. do any of you juice? is there a recipe or two that you love to pieces and wouldn’t mind sharing?

this weekend was kind of dreamy. dreamy in the fact that i did exactly what i wanted for two whole days. i’m taking the risk of sounding like a huge cheeseball right now, but i rediscovered the things that i love the most and take for granted quite often. do you ever have those realizations? i spent a lot of time in the sun exploring my city, ate a ton of fresh fruit, slept in without worrying about any form of a to-do list, spent a whole day with my precious sister sunning ourselves and got to see my pup before he goes in for surgery tomorrow. i also worked a little on a project that i am all kinds of excited about.

when i came across heather bullard’s beautifully styled images, i couldn’t help but fall in love with the quote at the bottom of her site. “let the beauty we love be what we do.” isn’t it romantic? as an artist, i find a lot of comfort and happiness in those words. i hope it inspires you to do all the things that you love today.

wordpress | for the love of design

last weekend i attended wordcamp kc and promised you guys a little roundup of the event. i am a big fan of wordpress, mostly because i have used a variety of different cms’s and wordpress seems to be the most user-friendly and easiest for clients to learn how to use. the back end is pretty and organized, which for me, as a designer, is everything.

we talked css, custom theme creation, and design and marketing among other topics. i know many of you may not necessarily use wordpress or know a whole lot about website creation in general so i will give you a basic short list of pointers i took away from the event that can apply to anyone with a website, whether it be a blog, a shop etc.

1. differentiate yourself with a customized theme, great images, and great content. content is king.
2. verify your site with webmaster tools. measure the effectiveness of your site with google analytics. set up goals!
3. look in to making your site responsive. mobile compatibilty is quite important nowadays.
4. the aesthetics of your site are just as important as your content. if you do not have the knowledge, time, experience, or the eye to make your site visually appealing, find someone who does! (wink, wink)
5. i am kicking myself in the behind for not attending this session, but everything about the presentation knocks my socks off. “design for where you are going. but remember: when you get there, you’re not really there.” i love that.

do you guys want to learn more about wordpress on ftlod? i have a list of really great resources, tips and quite a bit of knowledge on the subject. let me know if this is something you are interested in. could become a new column…possibly?

anywho, wordcamp is a fun time. there’s probably one close to you. you should go!

happy friday, loves!
