inspired 2-22 | for the love of design

to start off this week’s inspired – a compilation of the best free fonts of 2012. who doesn’t love a good, free font?

my morning routine is a fairly new column on bon appetit featuring celebrities and how they take their coffee, among other routinely things. mornings are my favorite time of the day. i love breakfast. and i love jonathan adler. this column was made for me.

i have an impossibly hard time saying no. i’m a people pleaser and i’ve always been terrified of hurting anyone’s feelings. but when you’re freelancing and working a full-time job, there comes a point where you just have to be able to say no to some things. “saying no means saying yes to something else” – this is a great read about recognizing your limits.

i recently came across some short instructional videos on calligraphy. is that not the most hypnotizing art form to watch? the videos were posted on the blog of sean mccabe, an incredibly talented hand lettering artist. i spent an embarrassing amount of time flipping through his portfolio this week.

this is such a brave and real post. as an introvert, it’s comforting and relatable. and for the extroverts, it opens up the possibility to understand how to love the introverts in your life in the best way. while we’re on the topic, if you haven’t watched this ted talk, you should.

these jimmy marble banners have been around for a while, but i came across his etsy shop this week and noticed his shop description read, “i hope you’re having the best day of your life.” this guy is spreading happiness with his work and i dig that.

i discovered this gold mine of resources. icons, textures, fonts, coding frameworks, all in one place!

you’re probably familiar with a blog about love. while they touch on many topics and struggles i’m not personally able to identify with, the act of loving others is universal and can be applied to any relationship. i’m so thankful someone linked to this audio on twitter of mara and danny discussing the importance of chosing love and being stable in your reactions.

i’ve spent the past few days enjoying all this snow from inside my apartment, but i plan on making my way outdoors in the next few days to experience what may be the last snow of the season. happy weekend to you. stay warm!

first off, happy tuesday! i apologize for things slowing down on the blog recently. the rest of my life has taken a turn down chaotic road, so le blog has been put on the back burner. not for much longer though, cross my heart.

i’ve been doing a lot of brand identity research as of late and needed to share with you one in particular that i found and loved. you guys already know i’m a sucker for gold foil, but it was the color palette that really stood out to me on this one. so chic, right?

travel | for the love of design
one of my goals for the new year was to travel more. yesterday an email popped into my inbox with some fares that just about killed me dead. i guess i’m at that point in my life where impulse buying at target is no longer satisfying enough. no way, now i do flights.

but unlike that evil trail mix (you know the one!) and the totally necessary sports bras and wedges and facial scrubs that are constantly sneaking their way right into my cart, i’m definitely not having buyer remorse here. because, guys! travel is the gift that keeps on giving. experiences are always the best kinds of purchases. and having places and people and experiences to look forward to is fun.

wouldn’t these postcards from a pair of pears be a cute way to show you’re missing those loved ones at home (but not too much) while you’re away?

when i’ve finalized plans i’m going to be needing your recommendations for all the cool spots, k?

inspiration | for the love of design

february snuck right up on me.

january has been a whirlwind of emotions, mostly good ones. i’ve actively been searching for inspiration this year due to some changes i want for my life in the upcoming months. i’ve recognized in 2013 that if i want big things to happen, i have to work on an equally big scale. i interviewed someone yesterday who was originally from the southwest and mentioned that she loved it here so much because midwest people are the nicest and are always willing to help. while that’s definitely true (i may be a bit biased), it got me thinking about the blogging community. i love being part of a group of talented men and women who genuinely encourage and help one another. i mean, isn’t it the greatest?

a few things that lit a spark in me this week:

a gorgeous print by oh my deer + pennyweight

sprucing up some projects for my portfolio – some of my work was lost in the tragic external drive wipe, so it’s been frustrating but also a fun challenge to be able to create and recreate this week.

one of my favorite instagrams and now blogs, paris in four months

bre is a rockstar and posted this awesome tutorial for making the most out of your facebook page. it may finally be time for ftlod to head to facebook.

i’ve never attended alt, but megan wrote a beautiful post that resonated with me and so many others. the clarity she brings to such subjects through her writing continues to amaze me.

the beginning really is that hardest part, isn’t it?

a collection of logos from stitch design co. – their work blows my mind in the best way.

a blog dedicated to spaces adorned with ikea goodies. yes, please!

rebecca atwood’s new site design by small shop and zoe rooney is pretty gorgeous, no?

a find myself drawn to pattern for inspiration lately. especially tribal prints.

what do you guys think of vine? i’m a little torn about the new platform as i am super awkward on camera. but there are several people that i have really enjoyed following this week. it’s fun to finally hear the voices + see the personalities of friends you’ve only met through email and blog posts.

i’ve found a lot of inspiration in getting out with friends and going new places. i feel so grateful to call some great ladies my friends and to live in a place with so much to offer. this photo was taken at party arty this past weekend.

happy friday to you!

style - tried + true | for the love of design

i’m pretty classic when it comes to my everyday style. not to say that i don’t get suckered into the trendy, because god knows that would be a lie. but for the most part, i tend to stick with what works. i consider it a blessing to finally be able to recognize what silhouettes are going to flatter my shape, what products aren’t going to freak my sensitive skin out, and what i’m going to be able to have around for years without tiring of it.

if this post doesn’t make me sound like a real live adult, i don’t know what will. without further ado, the items that make an appearance on the regular these days:

1 / le pens – i’m a left-handed gal, so i’m the pickiest when it comes to good writing utensils. any pen that smudges is no friend of mine. le pens dry super fast and come in the most fun colors.

2 / iphone5 – i’d never had an iphone until a few months ago and now that i have one i know i will never be able to go back to anything else. i use it for everything. my favorite apps right now are wunderlist, afterglow, spotify and of course, instagram!

3 / j.crew minnie – these are, by far, my favorite pair of pants i’ve ever put on my body. they’re so comfortable and can be dressed up for work or worn on a casual brunch date with the girls. the minnies are so good i own three pairs of them!

4 / covergirl lastblast mascara – mascara is the one item of makeup i usually put on if i’m in a hurry to get somewhere and need a quick way to look like i tried. i’ve tested a lot of the more expensive brands and i just keep coming back to this one. it’s a keeper.

5 / ray-ban wayfarers – they’re classic and iconic. who wouldn’t want to wear the same shades as ms. monroe? mine are prescription, so the fact that they help me see is also a plus.

6 / matrix vavoom freezing spray – i want to make out with this hairspray. it’s that good – trust me. i have the thickest of manes and it takes a lot to keep any kind of volume throughout the day. i would consider myself somewhat of a hairspray connoisseur and vavoom is the best of the best. and it smells good!

7 / starbucks blonde roast – i’m a huge fan of coffee and i love grabbing a cup at some of the local cafes in kansas city, but when i’m in a hurry the blonde roast is what i like to brew at home. i also carry vanilla liquid stevia in my purse pretty much everywhere i go (weird?). hello, instant vanilla latte!

8 / opi you don’t know jacque – i paint my nails once or twice a week. excessive? maybe. i love trying now polish colors and brands, but this one has been a staple of mine for years.

9 / coconut oil – have you ever scrambled eggs in this stuff? so. good. the awesome thing about coconut oil is that it’s natural and extremely versatile. i use for baking with, to remove my makeup at night and as chapstick during the day. how ’bout that? if you need any more reasons to grab yourself a jar, check out glitter guide’s post on even more uses for coconut oil.

what are some of the items you can’t live without on a day-to-day basis?

venice, italy | for the love of design
four day weeks are my favorite.

this weekend i’m headed to party arty at the nelson atkins. excited for the art, the drinks, and an excuse to wear fake eyelashes.

if you know me at all, you know that i come from a family of avid coffee drinkers. lately though, i’ve been craving tea instead of coffee in the mornings. i’m freaked out by this a little, but i welcome the change. it’s hard to become over caffeinated with tea, so my body is loving me for it. this has been my go-to this week.

last weekend was a devastating one for me. i haven’t shared until now because 1) i didn’t want to seem dramatic 2) i was still a little sad 3) i didn’t want it to seem like i was blaming anyone. the hard-drive that all of my europe pictures were saved on after i switched computers + cameras was wiped by accident by a family member. i do still have about 30 images from my semester abroad and i know that i will always have the memories, but the sentiment attached to those images was greater than i imagined. i’ve come to terms with it and now more than ever am motivated to make another trip across the pond very soon.

to twist the knife a little further, this movie that i’d ordered pre-wipe arrived in the mailbox. it was cute. a little cheesy, but cute.

i also discovered and fell head over heels for this blog a few days ago with breathtaking images of europe.

recently i’ve been (not-so-seriously) thinking about what life might be like if one day i decided to go freelance. i’ve always found a great amount of knowledge as well as a healthy dose of reality both here and here.

if you have made it to the end of this one, you’re a real gem. wishing you a happy weekend!

home lusting | for the love of design

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7

i have homes on the brain, you guys. remember when i mentioned i was all stressed in this post earlier this week? i believe a big part of the stressin’ has to do with not knowing where i’m going to live when my lease is up in june. i know june is still a good amount of time away, but i’m a planner, you know?

i’ve been scouring the internet for awesome apartments and condos in the kansas city area and have also been known to do the occasional (creepy) drive-by. i have friends in almost every area of the city as well as the suburbs, but i have grown to love the city so much that i can’t see parting with it any time soon.

one thing i know for sure is this time around i am going to have a list of wants. i came into my current lease with no real idea of what to look for in a home. i was just happy to have a space to call my own. and to tell you the truth, this apartment has been really good to me. but i’m ready for some hardwood floors and a boatload of natural light. i’m also going to invest in great vintage pieces that give my new space a little more character. i’ve also made a promise with myself that i will learn how to take care of a plant or two and keep them alive. *promise*

what are some of the things you look for when shopping for a new place? do you buy or rent? any of you kansas city ladies and gents know of any fabulous places i should be looking at?
